The Call

I know...you were hoping she called me back at some point, right? Well...she didn't, and the next two days I walked around in a proverbial daze as I tried to do what I needed to do, all while my family made the arrangements for Sal's burial.
Wednesday and Thursday were a blur, and and Friday night was the night of the wake. Sal's wife chose to have a closed casket and the funeral on Saturday. It was heart wrenching. When I arrived home Friday night, I was emotionally and physically wiped out.  I had no idea how I was going to get through Saturday.
Imagine my surprise when I hit my answering machine and there was a message...from Kate.
Only three days after I had called her to tell her the news.

  1. Not all friends are like that. It's not the distraction of the kids that kept her from calling. I bet she didn't know what to say. You and she had lost that connection. BFFs areBFFs no matter what. I have one friend since the fifth grade and believe me that's a long time in my life. She lives in Florida and we don't see each other much, but we do visit when we go down south. When we are together it's like we never parted. I have another friend from high school and it's the same thing. Now that my friends are retiring and moving away we still try to keep in touch - FaceBook helps a lot. I do know that they are there for me no matter what and we will always have each others back. It gets more important when you are older and your children have moved on. They can't be your entire life. That's just not healthy. You grow them up so they can be independent people and they come back from time to time when their life allows them, and all is right with the world. ;^)

  2. @Carol: I would like to believe that you're right...and of course, time has shown me so many things about the intricacies of this situation...but at the time, it felt like I had been punched in the gut.
Thanks for reading and I love your take on things!
