Our Trip

Our trip out West landed us in San Diego, California. Although both Rocco and I had traveled throughout California in the past, we had never been to San Diego, so we figured that would be our next stop. Plans were made to meet up with our friends from Los Angeles, and we decided to stay in Coronado, so that we could have a little beach with our city.
We left New York the morning of April Fools; it was snowing out, so I figured it had to be a joke. When we arrived it was 72 degrees with a breeze.
Needless to say...we were thrilled.
Our friends in California were in the middle of a moving crisis: selling their house and buying another, so we opted to meet them for a long lunch about half way between San Diego and LA rather than not see them at all. Initially, they were going to spend the weekend with us in Coronado, but LIFE intervened, and we had a wonderful afternoon, even though we were all hoping for more. The male of this couple is LAPD (Shout out to LAPD!) and so he and Rocco got to compare procedure and tactics while the wife and I talked about moving. They were able to keep it to a dull roar, and in the end, the conversation circled back around to non-cop things. Nice to be away from it while on vacation, although it always pervades---or lurks---depending on how you look at it!

I can remember for about a solid year or two after 9/11...every major event we went to...a wedding, a Bar Mitzvah...it didn't matter...wherever people were assembled in our area, the conversation would eventually turn to...Where were you when...?

There was no escaping it.

Sometimes I feel like that, being a Cop's Wife...it's become a part of the fabric of our lives, and it permeates even our "off-duty" conversation and life. There's always a story, an anecdote...something that ties us to a life that so few people understand.

There is no escaping it.
