Twisted

For those of us in the know, we know that the media in the United States leaves a lot to be desired---that said, we still have the best media outlets in the world---but there are often times a bias, be it conservative, or liberal, or sometimes in the middle. What we sometimes seem to forget is that actual people still write these articles, and that for the most part, actual people are still human beings, that come to the journalistic table with preconceived notions and biases, as humans do.
That said: I would like to formally ask the New York Daily News to cut the crap.
Here's the article:

An off-duty NYPD officer was arrested in upstate New York for allegedly having sexual contact with an underage boy, officials said.

Rosandre Burgher, 26, who is assigned to the 46th Precinct in the Bronx, is accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy on numerous occasions from February to June, Wallkill Police said.

A tipster called the NYPD on Monday to report the crime, officials said, and Burgher was arrested Tuesday.

He was charged with third-degree criminal sexual act, unlawfully dealing with a child and endangering the welfare of a child, authorities said.

Burgher — who has been on the force since 2006 and earned $56,609 last year — declined to comment when reached by phone Wednesday evening.

So what am I upset about, you might ask? Am I angered by the idea of a News outlet outing an alleged child molester? Not at all. Out them we should! In fact, here's a tip: if you're thinking about joining the NYPD and you like to diddle little children, please refrain from even putting in the application. WE don't want you; I can say for sure that the thousands of cops that expend blood, sweat, and tears on the NYC Streets would rather you not become a part of their particular club. Find another career path...or perhaps think about getting some serious help. Stop sullying the reputation of New York's Finest.

Go back. Re-read the last line again. See the part where the News mentions that this cretin officer earned $56, 609 last year?

AND?
SO?!?!

WHAT ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH THIS OFFENSE?!?!?!

For people who live outside of the NYC area, I will present to you this: most people can barely live on fifty-six thousand a year in New York. I don't know anything about this officer; if he has a wife/kid/girlfriend/baby mama/brother/mother, etc. that he also supports...let me just say that any of the above would make his budget incredibly tight.

But that's not the point. The point is: what does one thing have to do with another? If you click on the link and read into the comments, you'll see some people concurring with me, and then further expounding upon how the salary reference plays into the story.

I'll wind this up by saying that I am tiring quickly over the recurring bias that is prevalent in any story related to the NYPD. Whatever happened to journalistic standards? Or, in the face of this heinous crime...just standards?
