The Christening III

I was silently fuming for the rest of the event, and every person who asked me where Roc was made me all the more frustrated. I kept repeating over and over the circumstances surrounding the story, and nobody really seemed to care. Late that afternoon I began getting texts:
At Finish Line.
Freezing ass off.
Sorry so late.
UGH!
By the time the dessert dishes were cleaned up, I sent him a text that said Call when you can. He called me a few minutes after and said he didn't know when the hell he was going to get out of there; they put him at the Finish and it looked like he was going to have to wait for the last runner to go through.
"You're kidding me." I let out a slow exhale. "Are you okay?"
"I'm cold. And tired. And hungry." He sounded beat.
"I know. Look, I'm going back to Gram's. Do you want to meet me there?"
"Sure."
I went back to my Gram's and hung out for a while. About seven o'clock that night, Roc came through the door, and I could feel the cold that came in with him.
I made him some soup and after feeling rejuvenated enough to drive, we went home.
He missed the whole thing, and we were both tired and frustrated. My knee was acting up and I just wanted to crawl up in bed. If I recall correctly, I went home and did just that.

  1. We have some real drama with a lot of people in HF's side of the family and it used to bother me a lot, but now that he's a cop, it's even worse! My mom gave me some good advice that is hard to do since I am such a people pleaser. . . She said "your family comes first. You and your husband and your children. Nothing else or no one else matters". It's hard for me to follow that advice, but when it comes down to it and we might've offended a family member by not being at a wedding or something, our needs really did come first even if the rest of his family will never see or appreciate what he does. Anyway, that's too bad that your aunt took it personally.

  2. Some people will just never get it. Period.
    That much I've figured out!
