Switching It Up

Where my husband works, they pretty much always send Officers out in twos or more; it's a dangerous area, and very densely populated, so what it comes down to is a safety issue.
He has a steady partner, but they will sometimes switch it up, because a partner is out sick, or has court, perhaps a new or different Sergeant or Lieutenant takes over a tour...there's a bunch of reasons that Roc will sometimes work with someone other than Ivan.
Does that ever happen to your Cop? How many Cops out there ride alone? What's the patrol area like where he works? Does it make you nervous when they switch it up? Does it make him nervous? Feel free to comment back, share, and vent.
Cops: knock yourselves out...now's your chance!

  1. JR mainly rides alone. We are in a smaller rural community. There are 6 officers a corporal and a Sargent that take care of the area. Sometimes JR is the only one on duty. He often responds to calls himself and there are procedures though as to when he has to call for backup. For example he can't go to a domestic call on his own. The area that they cover is large, roughly 50 kms north, east and south of town and about 20kms west. There are additional towns and villages in that area as well.

Our last posting was much busier and more dangerous but JR still often worked alone.

We pray all the time for his protection. He deals with mainly unstable people and we want home home at the end of every shift.

  2. My husband always rides alone with his K9 but before he was k9 he still rode alone. He is a Deputy Sheriff and works anywhere in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Crime is high for mostly drugs and illegals. He is glad he doesn't have a partner since he's a "loner" type.

  3. PoPo rides alone most days but has a patrol partner in another car who is always there at the drop of a hat. They're VERY close and will ride together when things are kind of volatile in the area or when his partner, who is an FTO, doesn't have a trainee with him. I trust his partner and am glad he has him there to have his back.

  4. Although I thought I suspected this, I am still surprised to hear about how many of your guys are out there alone...I get that NYC policing is quite different than any other place (hence the world-famous-ness of the NYPD) but I admire your candor and obvious nerves of steel. My husband would probably rather ride with a K9 than some of the people he gets put with (LOL!) but they are very careful about sending them out together. If you visit NYC, you will sometimes see police vans filled with cops that have been dispatched to a particular location...sometimes they send out 8 or 10 cops at a time.

  5. Sam rides alone. Department policy because they're afraid officers might get distracted otherwise. But where he works the streets are actually set up as a grid system so help is pretty much seconds away and there is quite a few officers in any zone. He also spends most his nights answering calls with one of his zone partners who he refers to as his sister. Everyone there is pretty close so you know they have his back and vice versa.

  6. When Roc or any officer calls an "85" ---which is an Officer Needs Assistance NOW sort of call---there are about 40 cops that show up in about a minute or less. That is one of the few reasons I like him working in the Bronx. But they never go out alone; it's too densely populated.

  7. LAPD rolls patrol with a 2 man car mandatory. Doesn't matter what part of the city your in. Lucky my hubby gets along with everyone on shift!

  8. Shoutout to LAPD...one of Roc's dear friends is a LEO there...and I like the idea of 2 men minimum...we all know that sometimes stuff goes down in an instant.

To all of your significant others: Be safe out there...remember, your goal is to get home at the end of shift. Period.
